Kiev High-Energy Astrophysics Semester is a Series of lectures organized jointly by the INTEGRAL Science Data Center (Geneva, Switzerland), Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics (Kiev, Ukraine), Astronomical Observatory of the Kiev University, and Physics Department of the Kiev University in the framework of our common project "Virtual Roentgen and Gamma Observatory (VIRGO)," which is aimed at providing access to the high-energy astrophysics data and analysis software to Ukrainian astronomers and astronomy students.
The Lecture courses included in the program will cover several basic topics of high-energy astrophysics. Each course will be accompanied by the practical "hands-on" sessions at the computer class of the VIRGO. The idea of the hands-on sessions is to provide some basic knowledge of data analysis for main modern X-ray and gamma-ray telescopes, such as XMM-Netwon, INTEGRAL, Chandra and others. We expect that X-ray and gamma-ray data on the most interesting sources (X-ray binaries, pulsars, active galactic nuclei) discussed in the lectures will be analysed during the hands-on sessions. Special attention will be given to the "astrophysical data mining" — a collection of the publicly available data on the sources of interest with the help of "virtual observatory type" archives such as HEASARC.

The official language of the lecture courses is English. Some assistance with English – Ukrainian/Russian translation (translation of the viewgraphs, additional explanations during the practical sessions) could be provided for junior students not fluent in English.
If you plan to attend one or several lecture courses of our Astrophysical Semester, please fill in the REGISTRATION FORM. It is important for us to be able to estimate the number of workplaces needed for the practical sessions which will accompany each lecture course.
The list of registered participants of the Semester can be found here.
There is no registration fee for the Semester.
We can provide some financial
support (for travel and accomodation) for participants coming from
other cities. If you wish to apply for the financial support,
please indicate the details in the "Comments" section of the
For additional information, please contact Andrei Neronov (Geneva), Bohdan Hnatyk (Kiev), Yuri Shtanov (Kiev).
